Uintah High School Turns 100
2024 Marks 100 Years for Uintah High School
Here is a little bit of history for the 100 years since Uintah High School was formed.
Exterior of the first Uintah High School, built in 1923, and dedicated in 1924, at 600 West 200 South in Vernal, UT. It was built to the south of the Uintah Academy. This building was used until the new Uintah High School on 10th West and 1st North was built and dedicated in 1954. After the High School moved into the new building, this building was used as the South Building of the Ashley Valley Junior High until it was demolished in the early 1970’s.
Prior to the dedication of this building, all school grades were held in the Uintah Academy, built in 1911, and prior to that building “Old Central School” was built in 1902 but the first Central School was built in 1888. See photos and descriptions below.
Original Central School
The original Central School was built in 1888 and was a brick build of two rooms. It was built on a farm owned by William Ashton. He deeded the east half of the block to the school. Eight grades were held in the two rooms. A third room was added in 1893. This school was the first brick building in Uintah County. It was demolished in 1939. It was located on the southwest corner of the 200 South Vernal Avenue Block.
